Design of an experimental setup for flow investigations in venous cannulas

Cannula design is of prime importance for venous drainage during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). The new generation of self-expanding cannulas offers a potential increase of performance by taking advantage of the luminal width of the venous vasculature despite a relatively small access orifice. Nevertheless, the complex flow field in such porous pipe is still not fully understood. We propose in the present project to design a test rig dedicated to flow investigations in venous cannulas. The main objective is to provide a simple and reliable way to characterize hydraulic performances of self-expanding cannulas. The project will be conducted in collaboration with the Department of Cardio-vascular Surgery at Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV).
